Mooncake buyer guide · Product-first sizing

Mooncake tin box sizing,
inserts and pack-out.

A four-piece or eight-piece label does not determine the tin size. Start with the finished wrapped mooncake, build the real layout and insert around it, then check the formed tin and lid before committing to tooling or production.

Measure the finished unit—not the bare mooncake.

Record the maximum length, width or diameter and height of the individually wrapped product. Include the paper cup, sealed pouch, label fold or decorative band that will enter the final pack. Measure representative production samples rather than relying only on a nominal recipe size.

Then state the piece count and exact orientation. Four mooncakes in one layer, two layers of four, or a mixed assortment with tea sachets are different packaging systems even when the marketing name sounds similar.

Build outward from the pack-out.

This sequence makes assumptions visible before an existing mould is selected or a custom structure is drawn.

  1. Product envelope

    Draw the actual wrapped pieces

Use the maximum measured dimensions and arrange the required count. Include mixed sizes, paper cups, pouches, cards and utensils.

  2. Retention system

Add the insert or divider geometry

Define how each piece is held, loaded and removed. A formed tray, divider and simple paper component use space differently and need their own material and production review.

  3. Tin geometry

    Review usable internal space

Allow for formed corner radii, seams, wall shape, lid engagement and any hinge or closure feature. Nominal outside dimensions alone are not a fit guarantee.

  4. Human use

    Check loading, reveal and removal

The pack must be fillable in production and comfortable for the buyer to open. Test whether pieces can be removed without damage or awkward finger access.

  5. Physical approval

Pack and transport a representative sample

Approve the finished wrapped products, intended insert and selected tin together. Where movement or breakage is a concern, evaluate the final carton and transport route as part of the project.

Use reference dimensions to shortlist—not to guess fit.

These current Baoyue listings provide a commercial and structural starting point. A buyer still needs to confirm the usable space with the real products and insert.

The displayed RMB prices reproduce supplied product references under the shown 10,000+ piece basis. They are not export quotations and do not automatically include inserts, custom tooling, artwork variants, export cartons, tax, freight or delivery terms.

The insert is a separate engineered component.

Choose it from product protection, presentation, loading and destination requirements—not only appearance.

01 · Layout

Divider or grid

A divider can separate wrapped products and organise rows or layers. Board thickness, joint geometry, height and movement still need checking with the actual contents.

02 · Retention

Formed tray or fitted insert

A formed component can locate each piece more precisely, but cavity dimensions, flange, wall thickness, tooling, loading and removal all affect the outer pack.

03 · Presentation

Paper components and accessories

Cards, sleeves, tissue, utensils or tea pairings consume usable space and can change the reveal. Add them to the pack-out drawing from the start.

04 · Evidence

Material and market review

Insert material, direct or indirect product contact, barrier packaging and destination-market requirements must be confirmed for the actual project. No generic insert description proves compliance.

Reduce empty space without making the pack difficult to use.

Hong Kong’s Environmental Protection Department mooncake packaging guidance recommends efficient use of space, avoiding unnecessary partitions, minimising gaps and packaging materials, choosing recyclable materials and considering reuse. These are useful design principles, not a certification of a particular Baoyue pack.

For a custom tin, apply those principles through a tighter product-and-insert layout, fewer redundant components and a reusable proportion—while retaining enough verified clearance for loading, removal and transport.

Approve the complete packaging system.

A drawing can narrow the route; the packed physical sample verifies whether the design behaves as intended.

Mooncake tin sizing questions, answered carefully.

The answers explain the review route without presenting an untested dimension as a guarantee.

What size tin is needed for four, six or eight mooncakes?

Piece count alone cannot determine the tin size. Measure each finished wrapped mooncake, choose the arrangement and insert, then review formed corners, seams, lid clearance and removal space before approving a packed sample.

Can an existing mould be used for a mooncake tin box?

Yes, when the usable internal space, proportion, opening and insert route fit the complete packed product. Similar outside dimensions do not prove the product will fit, so the selected reference still needs a physical pack-out test.

Is the insert included with a custom mooncake tin?

An insert, divider or retaining component can be reviewed as part of the project, but it is not automatically included in a tin reference price. Its material, tooling, fit, food-contact route and packing basis must be confirmed in the quotation.

How much clearance should be allowed inside a mooncake tin?

There is no reliable universal clearance value for every tin and mooncake. Clearance depends on the wrapped product, insert material and forming, tin geometry, lid engagement, packing method and transport risk. Approve it with the actual components.

When should the physical mooncake packaging sample be approved?

Approve the physical pack before mass production, using representative finished mooncakes, individual wrapping, the intended insert, printed tin structure and export packing arrangement where transport performance matters.
