Custom tin packaging
specification checklist.

A useful tin project starts before the drawing. This guide helps a buyer define what the pack must hold, how it should open, what sits inside it and which decisions require evidence before quotation or production.

Start the brief

Specify the pack system, not only the tin.

The first useful question is not “How much is a tin box?” It is “What exactly must this pack do?” A tea canister, coffee tin, mooncake box and biscuit tin may all use tinplate, yet their product dimensions, loading method, inner packaging, opening frequency and display role are different.

Define the product and the complete pack system first. State whether the product will touch the metal or sit inside a bag, wrap, tray, divider or fitted insert. Record the orientation and count per tin. If the product can move, break, absorb odour or lose freshness, explain how the primary pack and internal support are intended to manage that risk. The tin should not be treated as an automatic substitute for a primary barrier or food-contact layer.

A good brief also separates confirmed requirements from preferences. “Internal space must hold twelve wrapped pieces” is a requirement. “A square tin might look stronger on shelf” is a preference to test. This distinction helps an existing mould review stay practical and tells the project team when a custom mould or different structure may be necessary.

What to settle before the first sample.

Each decision changes the next one. Work from product and pack-out toward shape, opening, decoration and approval.

  1. Product system

    Define what goes inside

    Record product type, unit dimensions, weight where relevant, count per tin, orientation and whether an inner bag, tray, wrap, divider or fitted insert is part of the pack. Include representative packed samples when possible; a bare product measurement may not describe the space the finished pack needs.

  2. Size and clearance

    Separate internal from external dimensions

    Use one unit and label every dimension. Internal usable space determines fit; external size affects cartons, shelf footprint and shipping. Allow for seams, lid engagement, inserts, loading and removal. Do not copy a competitor’s outside dimensions and assume the inside will be equivalent.

  3. Shape and tooling

    Test an existing mould before requesting a new one

    Round, square, rectangular and special-shaped references can be compared against the product and artwork. An existing mould can reduce one development variable only when its proportions and usable space actually fit. Custom tooling is a separate engineering and commercial decision, not a decorative checkbox.

  4. Opening and handling

    Describe how the lid should behave

    State whether the pack needs a separate lid, hinged lid, window, clasp or another opening direction. Consider how often it will be opened, whether the user lifts it with one hand, whether the lid remains attached and how the packed product is removed. Closure feel should be assessed on a physical sample.

  5. Artwork and surface

    Map design to real metal panels

    Prepare artwork for the approved dieline rather than a generic rectangle. Identify critical logos, small text, barcodes and areas crossing curves, seams or embossed features. CMYK, metallic ink, matte, gloss, embossing and debossing can be discussed, but the chosen combination must be reviewed against the structure and sample.

  6. Quantity and repeat plan

    Give a real estimate and its context

    State the estimated first order, variants, launch market and expected repeat pattern. A seasonal gift project and a year-round retail pack may require different decisions about tooling, artwork versions, spare components and retained approval references. MOQ and price should come from the resulting specification.

  7. Approval and documents

    Name what must be proved

    List the destination market, intended product contact, required tests or declarations, labelling needs, packing standard and approval owners. Ask which documents apply to the exact material and current project. A report for one submitted sample must not be treated as a blanket certificate for every tin or market.

Attach what removes guesswork.

A useful attachment answers a physical or approval question. It does not need to be polished, but its dimensions, version and purpose should be clear.

A representative packed product

Send a physical sample when practical, or provide clear photographs with a scale and labelled dimensions. Show the product in the condition in which it will enter the tin: wrapped, bagged, in a tray or otherwise protected. If several units are packed together, show the intended orientation and count. A bare product photo cannot reveal the thickness of the finished inner pack or the clearance needed to load it.

02 · Current packaging

What works and what should change

A current box, jar, tin or prototype can explain shelf footprint, handling and pack-out faster than adjectives. Mark the feature you want to retain and the problem you want to solve. Do not ask for a blind copy of another brand’s protected design. Use the reference to explain proportion, opening sequence, insert arrangement or a measurable constraint that the new project must address.

03 · Artwork information

Brand assets with version control

Identify the current logo, mandatory text, barcode, legal copy, colours and any elements that must align across lid and body. State which files are concepts and which are approved. Final artwork should follow the approved dieline; an image wrapped around a generic mock-up is not production artwork. If several languages or SKUs are planned, list each variant before quotation so the project is not costed as one design by mistake.

04 · Market and approval list

The evidence your organisation expects

Provide the destination market, intended product contact, buyer specification, required declarations or tests, carton and labelling rules, inspection expectations and approval owners. Ask for current documents tied to the proposed material and project. A document title or old report image is not enough; scope, sample, date and issuing body must be reviewed. This list allows gaps to be identified before they become production assumptions.

Avoid an unmeasured brief

“Same as the picture”, “premium quality”, “normal size” and a target price without pack details are not specifications. They can start a conversation, but they cannot support a reliable mould decision, packed-product sample or quotation. Mark unknowns as unknown and assign the next check instead of filling them with guesses.

What information is needed for a custom tin packaging quotation?

Begin with the product, target pack count, product and inner-pack dimensions, preferred tin shape or size, opening style, artwork status, estimated order quantity, destination market and required date. State whether the product will touch the metal or use an inner bag, tray or other primary pack. Photos or a representative packed sample can clarify details that dimensions alone may miss.

Should we choose an existing mould or custom mould?

An existing mould is worth reviewing when its internal size, proportions and opening fit the product and inner pack. It should not be selected only because its outside shape looks close. Custom tooling is a separate route when no existing reference supports the required dimensions or structure. Tooling feasibility, cost and timing must be confirmed for the actual design.

Does a tin automatically replace the primary food-contact pack?

No. Define the complete pack system, including any inner bag, tray, divider, wrap or fitted insert. Food-contact and destination-market requirements must be reviewed against the actual material, product, pack system and current project documents. A report for a different submitted sample is not automatic evidence for a new pack.

How should tin dimensions be specified?

State whether each dimension is internal or external and use one unit consistently. Include product dimensions, orientation, count per tin, inner packaging thickness, divider or insert space, and any clearance needed for loading and removal. For a round item, state diameter and height; for a rectangular item, label length, width and height.

When are MOQ, price and delivery confirmed?

MOQ, quotation, tooling, sample timing, production schedule and delivery depend on the selected structure, dimensions, decoration, quantity, packing method and destination. They should be confirmed in the project quotation rather than assumed from a general guide or a reference product page.
