When sourcing custom tin boxes, buyers often focus first on size, shape, printing and price. The material underneath the decoration is just as important.
Most custom metal tins are not made from solid tin. They are made from tinplate — thin steel coated with tin. The steel base provides strength and formability, while the surface can be prepared for printing, coating and forming.
For a B2B buyer, writing only “tinplate” on an RFQ is rarely enough. Thickness, box dimensions, structure, coating, printing, the packed product and the shipping environment need to be reviewed together.
This guide explains the main material questions to resolve before sampling or mass production.
What Is Tinplate?
Tinplate is a cold-rolled steel sheet with a tin coating applied to the surface. Electrolytic tinplate, often abbreviated as ETP, uses an electro-deposition process to apply that coating to the steel substrate.
For packaging production, this material can be:
- cut and stamped into different shapes;
- formed into lids, bodies and bottoms;
- printed with custom artwork;
- embossed or debossed when the artwork and structure allow;
- lacquered or coated when the application requires it;
- used across many dry-product, secondary and gift-packaging structures.
Industrial packaging steel is available in different thicknesses, tempers, coating specifications and surface systems. Two tin boxes that look similar in a photograph may therefore use different material specifications.
Why Is Tinplate Used for Custom Tin Packaging?
1. Structural strength
The steel base can give a formed tin more rigidity than an ordinary folding carton. Finished strength still depends on the complete design, including dimensions, panel area, lid construction, seams, curled edges and formed details.
2. Formability for different structures
Tinplate can be formed into round, square, rectangular and more specialised structures. Common commercial uses include:
custom tin packaging for brands, importers and packaging companies; tea tins; coffee tins; cookie and biscuit tins; chocolate and confectionery tins; gift tins; cosmetic tins; and promotional metal boxes.
The material specification should be selected together with the finished structure rather than copied from an unrelated tin.
3. A surface for branded decoration
Tin packaging can support custom graphics, colour systems and decorative finishes. Depending on the project, the exterior may use CMYK or spot-colour printing, gloss or matte varnish, and selected embossed or debossed areas.
Material choice, printing and forming are one production system. A deeply formed or embossed lid, for example, needs different feasibility checks from a simple flat lid.

How Thick Should Tinplate Be for a Custom Tin Box?
There is no single thickness that is correct for every tin box.
The appropriate gauge depends on the design and application. A factory review should consider:
- Tin dimensions — a compact tin and a large-format tin do not have the same structural requirements.
- Product weight — a lightweight tea pack and a heavier gift set apply different loads.
- Shape — round, square and rectangular tins distribute loads differently.
- Lid structure — slip lids, hinged lids, double lids and other closures have different tolerance and forming requirements.
- Panel area — a large flat surface may need additional stiffness or formed reinforcement.
- Embossing and forming depth — demanding forming operations affect material selection.
- Packing and transport — export cartons, stacking and handling conditions affect the protection needed.
For example, 0.23 mm tinplate may work for one design and still be unsuitable for another. A more useful question is: Is this specification suitable for my box size, structure, packed product and shipping conditions?
Is Thicker Tinplate Always Better?
No. Custom packaging performance cannot be judged by thickness alone.
Increasing thickness may improve stiffness in some structures, but it also changes material usage and forming requirements. Reducing thickness only to lower cost can create problems when the finished structure no longer has the required rigidity.
The goal is to choose a material and structure that meet the project requirement without unnecessary over-specification. The approved physical sample and complete pack test matter more than a single number in a quotation.
Thickness Is Not the Complete Tinplate Specification
If two quotations both state 0.23 mm tinplate, that does not automatically mean the material specifications or finished performance are identical.
Tinplate may also differ in:
- steel grade and temper;
- tin coating specification;
- surface condition and passivation;
- lacquer or organic coating;
- forming requirements;
- intended packaging application.
Buyers can also review Baoyue’s tinplate material and testing information. Reports are sample-specific and should be checked against the confirmed material, packed product and destination-market requirements.
What About Tinplate for Food-Related Packaging?
For tea, coffee, cookies, chocolate, candy and other food-related projects, buyers should discuss the complete packaging system rather than relying on a general “food-grade tin” statement.
The tinplate, internal coating, printing system, direct or indirect contact, closure, liner and actual packed product can all affect the final specification. Tea or coffee may use an inner bag; cookies or chocolates may use a tray, paper cup or other insert. Direct liquid contact is outside the normal scope of Baoyue’s decorative tin packaging and requires a separate, application-specific review.
When sending an RFQ, tell the factory:
- what product will be packed;
- whether the product directly contacts the metal;
- whether an inner bag, tray, paper cup or insert will be used;
- the expected fill weight or volume;
- the destination market;
- any specific testing or compliance requirements.
This allows the project to be reviewed against the real use case instead of assumptions.

Tinplate and Custom Printing
Tinplate is useful for branded packaging because artwork can be printed on prepared metal sheets before the components are formed into the finished box. Printing on metal is different from printing on white paper: the metallic substrate, white base layers, colour references and varnish can all influence the result.
Before mass production, the project should normally define:
- final artwork and dieline;
- CMYK or Pantone colour requirements;
- inside and outside printing areas;
- gloss, matte or another approved finish;
- embossed or debossed areas;
- the sample and colour-approval method.
Treat the material, printing and forming plan as one coordinated specification.
What Should Buyers Include in a Tin Box RFQ?
A first inquiry does not need to be a complete engineering specification. The following information is enough to begin a practical review:
- Product to be packed
- Required dimensions or an approximate size
- Estimated order quantity
- Reference photo, existing tin or preferred structure
- Printing and finish direction
- Destination market
If you already have a drawing or physical sample, include that information as well. The factory can then assess whether an existing mould is close to the requirement and what should be verified before sampling.
Existing Mould or New Mould?
The dimensions and structure determine whether an existing mould can be considered. If a suitable reference is available, a buyer may avoid developing a completely new structure. Unique dimensions, closures or formed details may require new tooling.
If your project has some dimensional flexibility, send:
- target length, width and height;
- whether these are internal or external dimensions;
- acceptable dimensional tolerance;
- product size and insert requirements;
- estimated quantity;
- a reference image.
You can compare current shapes in the product catalogue or send a project brief for an existing-mould check.
Tinplate and End-of-Life Recovery
The steel base of tinplate can enter established steel recovery streams where suitable collection and recycling infrastructure exists. End-of-life performance still depends on the complete pack, local facilities and how different components are separated.
For a brand team, material recovery can be considered alongside appearance, protection, cost, transport and manufacturing feasibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tin box actually made from?
Most commercial tin boxes are made from tinplate rather than solid tin. Tinplate uses a steel base with a tin coating applied to the surface.
Is 0.23 mm tinplate suitable for a custom tin box?
It can be suitable for some designs. The decision should also consider the box size, shape, structure, product weight, formed details and transport conditions. Thickness alone cannot confirm suitability.
Is thicker tinplate always stronger?
Greater thickness can improve stiffness in some structures, but finished strength also depends on geometry, seams, lid design and formed reinforcement. Thicker is not automatically the better specification.
Can tinplate be custom printed?
Yes. Tinplate packaging can support custom artwork and different surface finishes. The process should be confirmed against the artwork, substrate and approved appearance.
Can tinplate be embossed or debossed?
Selected logos and patterns can often be embossed or debossed. Feasibility depends on the artwork, location, forming depth, lid structure and surrounding clearances.
Can Baoyue check whether an existing mould matches my size?
Yes. Send the required dimensions, estimated quantity, packed product and a reference image. The factory team can check relevant existing references before discussing whether new tooling is needed.
Is tinplate packaging suitable for direct food contact?
Suitability depends on the complete material, coating, product-contact and destination-market specification. Tell the factory whether the product touches the metal or uses an inner bag, liner or tray so the project can be reviewed correctly.
Planning a Custom Tin Packaging Project?
Choosing tinplate is not simply a matter of selecting the thickest sheet. The material must work with the tin dimensions, structure, decoration, packed product and production process.
Send us your product, required size, estimated quantity and a reference image. Baoyue’s Dongguan factory team can review the project, check suitable existing mould references and discuss an appropriate material direction before sampling.
